I am a lawyer and former law teacher but I have never been a litigant myself. After a serious bicycle crash that broke my femur and elbow, I asked around for recommendations and found Kyle Smith of Bay Area Bicycle Law. Turns out he and I were both board members of Bike East Bay and I had met him in passing at a member meeting. Kyle did a spectacular job handling my claim and we achieved a maximum outcome, better than the insurance policy limits (of the owner of the unleashed dog that crashed into my bike while I was riding on the Bay Trail). That was possible because Kyle combined excellent negotiations with both the insurer and my medical provider (which held a lien for repayment of medical expenditures). In the end, he got the medical entity to reduce its claims so that my final settlement exceeded what I would have gotten if my settlement were at the policy limits and if I had to pay the full lien. Not only did Kyle guide me through the claiming process, he encouraged me to write a diary of my experiences during and after the crash. He was always available by phone and email. Most importantly, he understood my pain and loss and authored a compelling claim. I hardly recognized myself in his redrafting of my story and that turned out to be a good thing because I have a tendency to minimize pain and maximize rehabilitation. So in the end we achieved a maximum recovery and a maximum rehab. I'm happy to be back on the bike with a generous settlement achieved without having to go to court. The whole process took less than six months.

I was doored by a passenger exiting an Lyft without warning. My injuries were not life-threatening but it was about 8 - 10 weeks before I was quite over it. Luckily the police and paramedics were there almost immediately and the police (I discovered later) filed a police report that rightly put opening a car door into traffic as being the cause. I contacted Bay Area Bicycle Law to see if I could get some compensation for something that had banged me up quite badly, and they were wonderful! Kyle and all of the other people I worked with there were easy to work with, made time for me, kept me informed, and eventually got me a reasonable settlement. Very satisfied. I hope I never need them again, but if I should I wouldn't hesitate to contact them.

Without the efforts OF BABL I would never have received compensation for my accident. They were excellent advocates and obtained a reasonable settlement for my injuries. I was hit by a car doing a right turn at an intersection while I was on my bike in Aug 2018. We reached a settlement agreement with the insurance company which I felt was fair and covered the cost of my hospitalization and potential future treatment for my facial laceration and scarring.
